The Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels
Teaching kids about their Guardian Angels is one of my favorites! It is so comforting for kids to realize that there is a special Angel, specifically assigned by God Himself to watch over and protect them.
Introduce:
Start by introducing the concept of Guardian Angels to the class. Tell your students that just as God intentionally create them in a unique, amazing way, He also assigned a special Guardian Angel to watch over and protect them - even before they were born.
Brainstorm:
Even though they cannot see or hear them, this Guardian Angel is always by their side. And, they can talk to and pray to their Guardian Angels! They can ask for guidance when making a decision, for help resisting temptation, and for protection. Ask students for other things they can bring to their Guardian Angels. Stress to the children that their Guardian Angel loves them and wants to help them!
Illustrate:
Encourage students to draw a picture of themselves with their Guardian Angel watching over them. Maybe it is a picture of themselves climbing a tree with their Guardian Angel ready to catch them if they fall; maybe they are quietly reading and their Guardian Angel is sitting nearby.
Bulletin Board:
Display the Guardian Angel prayer in the center of the bulletin board and display students’ illustrations around the words. Encourage passerbys to pray the Guardian Angel prayer as they visualize their Guardian Angel traveling with them.
Guardian Angel Craft - Option 1:
On a small piece of paper, students can draw an Angel. On the back, write the words to the Guardian Angel Prayer. Encourage the students to keep their angel in their pocket wherever they go as a reminder that their Guardian Angel is always with them.
Guardian Angel Craft - Option 2:
Create a bigger angel and have students color and cut out. If you are able, hang the Guardian Angels above each students’ desk. This is a GREAT visual representation of their Guardian Angels (literally!) watching over them.
Guardian Angel Letter Writing
Encourage students to write a letter to their Guardian Angels. They can share anything they are worried or concerned about, ask their Angel for help… the ideas they came up with when “brainstorming” can help here! Younger students can draw a picture to go with their feelings.
Reflect & Pray:
Spend time focusing on Bible verse Psalm 91:11:
“For He commands His angels…to guard you wherever you go.” Consider dimming the lights, reading the Bible verse and guiding students to reflect on its meaning. Together, pray the Guardian Angel prayer. Allow a few minutes of silence for students to talk to their Guardian Angel in their minds.
Wrap-Up:
Remind students that October is a time to remember their Guardian Angels, but the Guardian Angels are ALWAYS there! Students can always turn to them, always pray to them, and always take comfort in their watchful presence.
